Mainly Big Bands
It was with not a little trepidation that I accepted
a recommendation to listen to the Gotham Jazz Orchestra
debut big band CD some time ago. I expected the
music to be extravagantly intellectual and having
little to do with everyman's concept of what a
big band should be. It was going to be a challenge
and frankly, hard work. I really don't want that.
I expect my music to be emotional, dynamic, lyrical
and so on. Well now it has been released.
This album was an exciting surprise. Accepting
the concept of the album, it is unexpectedly and
surprisingly accessible. The writing although dense,
encourages wonderful soloing opportunities from
an all-star NY cast including Tim Ries, John Riley,
Ron Carter (bass), Pat Hallaren and many more.
In no time at all any doubts you had are lost as
you are transported by this fresh and exhilarating
musical experience. The original lyrical ideas will
seduce the listener, the complexity of the ensemble
writing will suddenly make sense and you will appreciate
the extraordinary dynamic capabilities of this
superb orchestra.
The arrangements are available now from UNC JAZZ
PRESS. Those of you who experiment with the the
music of Maria Schneider would do well to listen
to Mike Holober's work, there is little doubt that
his arrangements will add colour to to your library.
This is definately the ' state of the art'.
Over the last few years the inquiring minds of
a number of top arrangers in North America have
been plundering the European jazz scene for new
ideas, new inspiration. My experience of some recent
releases seems to indicate that we could now be
seeing the result of this experience.
This has to be a highly recommended album for
those with a need for intellectual stimulation
from their music. It has also to be recommended
for those who just enjoy being immersed in an emotional
music experience, as I said - transported.
I cannot walk away from this review without telling
you about Mike Holober's small group CD 'CANYON'
SSPCD016. I would earnestly advise anyone considering
THOUGHT TRAINS as a purchase ought to listen to
CANYON. An object lesson how to explore new territory
and still pay homage to the need for swing and
lyricism. All of the CD is exceptional, the ballads
will break your heart.... gorgeous!!!
