Coda:
The Journal of Jazz and Improvised Music
[from a review of Flip! and
Doug Lawrence: Street Wise (Alltribe)]
Here are a couple of new releases
that deserve some attention. While
neither proposes any revolutions or cosmic breakthroughs,
both succeed in what they set out to do, which
is all one should ask. The four musicians on Flip! have
worked together from some time (this is their third
joint release) and is shows. The level
of writing is generally high and the soloing is
quite effective, but the strong suit is the group
interaction that always keeps things bubbling along.
I guess you might call theis style modern mainstream,
advance harmonic thinking of the post-George Russell
- Bill Evans school is the rule of the day with
litter reference to anything from the post-Ornette
world. Parsons is a convincing
saxman and Monder is beginning to be noticed as
one of the best younger guitarists from the Hall-Frisell
lineage. Both
get off well-turned solos, and their unison
sound on quirky lines like the title track is delicious,
but what keeps the listener coming back is the
way all four musicians listen and react to each
other.
