American Saxophone Quartet |
|
|
There's no question that saxophones work beautifully together in tandem with each other, and the saxophone section on its own -- typically comprising soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone versioins of the instrument -- has a lively presence in chamber music. I've recently been enjoying Gandy Dancer (Sons of Sound SSPCD004, a 1999 release of material originally recorded in 1984), the American Saxophone Quartet's charmer of a disc that includes Bernard hoffer's spiffy "Variations on a Theme of Stravinsky" and an always genial, sometimes hilarious three-movement quartet composed for the group by Seymour Barab.
