SECRET AGENT’S COVER BLOWN!
Akira Tana Comes in From the
Cold, Grooving Heavy on US Debut
New York, NY — Distinguished
drummer Akira Tana moves out front for his debut
as a leader:
Secret
Agent Men. On
this disc, spy soundtracks from the golden age
of Cold War cloak and dagger entertainment receive
deep-groove Hammond B3 jazz treatment. This is
straight up 100% party music with big-time musicianship.
Joined by B3 organ master Dr. Lonnie
Smith, bassman Rufus Reid, guitarist Rodney Jones,
Bob Kenmotsu
on saxophones and Chuggy Carter on percussion,
the Secret Agent Men reinterpret television and
movie themes from the ‘50s through the ‘80s
for today’s audience. Consistent with the
direction of the Sons of Sound label, jazz sensibility
meets pop culture with musical integrity.
Since 1979, Akira Tana has been
among the most sought-after drummers on the international
jazz
scene. Recognized for his ability to ignite rhythm
sections and create pure musical dialog with soloists,
his colorful and interactive style has led to concert
and club work with jazz greats including Sonny
Rollins, Jim Hall, Paquito D’Rivera, Kenny
Burrell, Jimmy Heath, and Dizzy Gillespie. His
production skills well known in Japan, the US audience
will now have a chance to hear the American-born
Tana in an entirely new musical context that is
still rooted in jazz and tuned into contemporary
culture.
Street Date: September 4, 2002.
