The Rochester
International Jazz Festival will feature
three Sons of Sound groups/artists this
year: The Denis
DiBlasio/Dave Mancini Quartet
(Sunday, June 12th, 6PM at the RJIF Club
Pass Big Tent), Trio
East (Thursday, June 16th,
6PM at the RJIF Club Pass Big Tent, and
10PM at the Little Theatre), and The Bob
Sneider Trio (every night of the Festival,
June 10-18, 10:30PM, State Street Bar & Grill,
Crown Plaza Hotel). Bobby also appears
with Phil Flanagan on June 12th at 6PM
at the Jazz Street Stage at Gibbs Street.

for Music Education…
Speaking of gigs, jazz and trumpet virtuoso
Marvin Stamm will join the line-up of world-renowned
musicians in Rochester at The
Commission Project’s annual Swing ‘N
Jazz Festival, Friday,
June 3 through Sunday, June 5. Stamm,
discovered in the 60s by Stan Kenton, was
jazz trumpet soloist in Kenton’s orchestra
before he began touring with Woody Herman.
And Stamm performed with music icons Frank
Sinatra and Benny Goodman in the 70s. Trombonist
Fred Wesley, who’s played with such
legends as Ray Charles and James Brown returns
as Swing ‘n Jazz Music Director. In
addition to Stamm and Wesley, this year’s
artists include Carl Atkins, Keter Betts,
and Sons of Sound recording artists Jay
Leonhart, Bob
Sneider, Akira
Tana, Mike
Holober, and Rich
Thompson.
Swing ‘n Jazz features three days
of jazz, free educational workshops for students
of all ages, golf and food. This is
the festival’s eighth year and all
the proceeds help fund The Commission Project’s
local and national music education programs.

Swing ‘n Jazz VIII, supported in part
by a matching grant from the National Endowment
for the Arts,is a unique event that combines
Rochester jazz musicians with international
stars to perform in public jam sessions which
can’t be heard anywhere else. The Swing ‘n
Jazz Festival laid the groundwork for the
Rochester International Jazz Festival.

Saturday, June 4: 9-11AM, Educational
workshops at Eastman School of
Music, Hochstein School of Music & Dance,
School of the Arts, James Monroe High School,
Rochester City School #42 and Greece Arcadia
High School. Workshops are free
and open to the public. Students
of any age are welcome to bring their instruments
(or come unaccompanied) and join workshop
leaders to listen, play and learn about
performing and improvisation. The National
Endowment for the Arts recently awarded
The Commission Project a $10,000 matching
grant to help fund these free workshops.
Students who attend workshops receive complimentary
tickets to Saturday evening’s gala
jam session.
