New Release…

In The RingRay Marchica climbs In The Ring with Rodney Jones, Lonnie Plaxico, and Teodross Avery in his corner, for nine rounds of funk, bebop, and Latin instrumental music. This is the New York jazz-funk sound from four of the City's most fit contenders. After six years together as house band for The Rosie O'Donnell Show, Marchica and Jones know each others moves and can bob and weave their way though any groove.

Gigs…

Drummer Ray Marchica displays his considerable chops with the Ed Palermo Big Band playing the music of Frank Zappa. Tonight, Wednesday, June 1, Iridium Jazz Club, 1650 Broadway (Corner of 51st), New York City. Sets at 8 & 10PM. Reservations: 212-582-2121.

RJIFThe Rochester International Jazz Festival will feature three Sons of Sound groups/artists this year: The Denis DiBlasio/Dave Mancini Quartet (Sunday, June 12th, 6PM at the RJIF Club Pass Big Tent), Trio East (Thursday, June 16th, 6PM at the RJIF Club Pass Big Tent, and 10PM at the Little Theatre), and The Bob Sneider Trio (every night of the Festival, June 10-18, 10:30PM, State Street Bar & Grill, Crown Plaza Hotel). Bobby also appears with Phil Flanagan on June 12th at 6PM at the Jazz Street Stage at Gibbs Street. Thanks to festival producer John Nugent for his support of the local artists and this label.

Jay Leonhart is touring his one-man show, It Is Impossible To Sing And Play The Bass in Los Angeles (June 1st, Steinway Hall; June 2nd, The Vick; June 3rd, Steinway Hall, Fields Piano).

Swing 'N JazzBenefit for Music Education…

Speaking of gigs, jazz and trumpet virtuoso Marvin Stamm will join the line-up of world-renowned musicians in Rochester at The Commission Project’s annual Swing ‘N Jazz Festival, Friday, June 3 through Sunday, June 5. Stamm, discovered in the 60s by Stan Kenton, was jazz trumpet soloist in Kenton’s orchestra before he began touring with Woody Herman. And Stamm performed with music icons Frank Sinatra and Benny Goodman in the 70s.  Trombonist Fred Wesley, who’s played with such legends as Ray Charles and James Brown returns as Swing ‘n Jazz Music Director.  In addition to Stamm and Wesley, this year’s artists include Carl Atkins, Keter Betts, and Sons of Sound recording artists Jay Leonhart, Bob Sneider, Akira Tana, Mike Holober, and Rich Thompson.

Swing ‘n Jazz features three days of jazz, free educational workshops for students of all ages, golf and food.  This is the festival’s eighth year and all the proceeds help fund The Commission Project’s local and national music education programs. Swing ‘n Jazz VIII, supported in part by a matching grant from the National Endowment for the Arts,is a unique event that combines Rochester jazz musicians with international stars to perform in public jam sessions which can’t be heard anywhere else. The Swing ‘n Jazz Festival laid the groundwork for the Rochester International Jazz Festival.

The Swing ‘n Jazz 2005 Calendar:

Friday, June 3: 7:30PM, Trombonists’ Night Out, Country Club of Rochester. The lineup includes Keter Betts, Evan Dobbins, Nick Finzer, Phil Flanigan, Dave Gibson, Sean Joseph, Bob Kalwas, John Marcellus, Bob Sneider, Akira Tana, Rich Thompson, Fred Wesley, Brian Zimmer. (Ticket Prices: Adults $15, Students $10)                         

Saturday, June 4: 9-11AM, Educational workshops at Eastman School of Music, Hochstein School of Music & Dance, School of the Arts, James Monroe High School, Rochester City School #42 and Greece Arcadia High School. Workshops are free and open to the public. Students of any age are welcome to bring their instruments (or come unaccompanied) and join workshop leaders to listen, play and learn about performing and improvisation. The National Endowment for the Arts recently awarded The Commission Project a $10,000 matching grant to help fund these free workshops. Students who attend workshops receive complimentary tickets to Saturday evening’s gala jam session.

Saturday, June 4: 8PM, Gala Jam Session, Hochstein Performance Hall. All About JazzIn Print…

For the June issue of All About Jazz - New York, writer Brian Lonergan contributes a profile of Sons of Sound.
