Radio Report…
The May 28, 2004 JazzWeek US
Radio Chart shows two Sons of Sound discs, Moon
Over The World by Akira Tana, and Interconnection by
Bob Sneider & Paul Hofmann, tied at #35. Moon rose
as high as the #11 spot during its current
run of over three months (13
weeks at press time) in the Top 50 chart. Interconnection is
on the way up the charts in its second week
with a bullet.

With the JazzWeek convention and International Jazz Festival
in Rochester, NY during the first week of June, many national jazz radio
music programmers have been able to see, hear, and meet Sons of Sound
artists Jay Leonhart, Akira Tana, Mike Holober, Bob Sneider, and Paul
Hofmann.

Media
Hits…
The All
Music Guide gave four
stars to Interconnection by
Bob Sneider & Paul Hofmann. Rick
Anderson writes: "Guitar and piano
is one of those duo combinations that
really shouldn't work at all… But
when they succeed -- as they did, most
famously, in the hands of pianist Bill
Evans and guitarist Jim Hall -- the results
can be spectacular. Guitarist
Bob Sneider and pianist Paul Hofmann
have a similar kind of chemistry to that
demonstrated by Evans and Hall on their
1960s albums Undercurrent and Interplay,
but their style is their own, and it
comes out most clearly on their original
compositions."
Modern
Drummer singled out Akira Tana for Moon
Over The World in its May issue.
Jeff Porter writes: "Each of his three
solo outings boasts a mature, focused
eloquence. It's a highly
satisfying setting for Tana's intricate,
sensitive, and swinging drumming.
Aided by bassist Rufus Reid and pianist
Ted Lo, Tana offers impressive originals,
covers, and jazz treatments of traditional
and popular Japanese and Chinese melodies. Tana
is a big listener, and exciting "orchestrator" who
employs his formidable chops for phrase
building. Not a gratuitous note in the
set."

Music Education…
Swing‘N
Jazz VII, highlighted
by free jazz educational workshops and
a gala concert on Saturday,
June 5th, came off in grand style. TCP
Director Ned Corman and Music Director
Fred Wesley led an all-star group of musicians
in a unique forum for students and professional
role models to interact.

In the photos, Akira Tana and
the legendary Keter Betts (Ella Fitzgerald)
and Andy McGhee (Lionel Hampton) lead a workshop
at the Rochester School of the Arts, while Bob
Sneider and Jay Leonhart lay
down the groove for student musicians at
the Eastman School of Music. In all, hundreds
of students attended the seven simultaneous
workshops around the Greater Rochester Area.
Sons of Sound and its artists proudly support
music education through the efforts of TCP,
which is why you might notice their logo
on many of our releases. |
In
the Studio…
Rested from the gig at the Jazz Standard, Mike
Holober went into Avatar Studios
to record the follow up to Canyon,
featuring Wolfgang Muthspiel, Tim Ries,
Brian Blade, and John Patitucci.
Under the working title Wish List,
the band recorded nine tracks over two days.
Look for Wish List in 2005. In the
interim, Thought Trains from
Mike with The Gotham Jazz Orchestra will
be released this summer. |
