Artist Profile…
If
you don't know Mike
Holober, judge him by the artists who
choose to gig and record with him: Brian
Blade, Scott Colley, Time Ries, Wolfgang
Muthspiel, Steve Cardenas, Fred Hersch,
Clarence Penn, John Patitucci, and Ron
Carter. Dan McCleneghan of All About
Jazz writes: "Holober's piano
style can be compared to a handful of
Miles Davis alumni, perhaps: Bill Evans,
Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock."
Mike
made his debut as leader on Canyon,
a quintet recording that received three
stars from DownBeat in the U.S.
and four headphones from Jazzwise in
the U.K. About that disc, All About
Jazz writes: The arrangements here
don't call attention to themselves but
are absolutely first-rate, begging
for repeated listens… Marvelous!"
Mike
returns later this year as the leader of
The Gotham Jazz Orchestra on Thought
Trains. That recording features some
of New York City's finest session players
performing big band arrangements of his
original compositions. Meanwhile, the GoJO
makes its debut in a performance at IAJE
in New York City later this month.
Finally, Mike is profiled this month in
the "Hearsay" column of JazzTimes magazine
and in our monthly ad in DownBeat. |
Media Hits…
 In
addition to the Holober feature in JazzTimes this
month, Jim Ferguson adds his praise for
Gene Bertoncini's Acoustic
Romance: "One of the finest
players of this discerning breed [of acoustic
nylon-string guitarists] is Gene
Bertoncini, whose command of harmony and
texture can transform even the most mundane
tune into an intriguing, multidimensional
masterpiece, something he does with certainty
on Acoustic Romance… Lurking
behind Acoustic Romance's schmaltzy
title and 60s-era graphics are some serious
solo guitar and trio performances (with
bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Akira Tana),
recorded in 1992. In the former category, "Edelweiss" and "'Round
Midnight" undergo a series of brilliant
variations that encompass details like
varied textures and sublime reharmonization. "

New
Release…
Up
for release
on February
16, 2004 is Moon
Over The World by
Akira Tana
(SSPCD016).
Joined
by bassist
Rufus Reid
and pianist
Ted Lo, the
drummer leads
a unique Asian-American
trio project
that draws
upon Chinese
and Japanese
pop and folk
melodies as
inspiration
for a set of
improvisational
jazz. Just
as the American
songbook has
provided many
of the standards
of the jazz
repertoire,
Tana looks
to the East
for fresh material
with broad
cultural appeal.
Joel
Roberts in All
About Jazz writes: "Tana,
Reid and Co.
have the chops
and the imagination
to elevate
the material
above the norm,
and the good
sense to have
fun with a
fun idea." Jeff
Potter of Modern
Drummer adds: "teamed
with supremo
bassist Rufus
Reid, Tana’s
drumming leads
the pack with
nimble touch
and urgent
groove." |
