On
The Air…
Since
we last wrote, Gene Bertoncini's Acoustic
Romance has remained firmly in
the Top 20 on the JazzWeek US
radio charts. This week, the CD is #9 and
still rising after seven straight weeks
on the chart.
Please listen and out why Lee Prosser
of Jazz Review calls Gene "one
of the finest guitarists to perform the
American Songbook." |
In Print…
 Positive
notices for Mike Holober's Canyon continue
to come in. Dan McCleneghan, in the October
2003 All About Jazz, writes:
"Holober's piano style can
be compared to a handful of Miles Davis
alumni, perhaps: Bill Evans or Chick
Corea, Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock;
but it's his tunes and the ensemble interplay
rather than his instrumental prowess
that hold sway on Canyon;
and after seven fine Holober compositions,
the disc closes out with two standards, "You
and the Night and the Music" and "Stardust," the
former getting a piquant and upbeat treatment
that starts out with Holober accompanying
guitarist Muthspiel for an interlude
of flowing low-key sting… The arrangements
here don't call attention to themselves
but are absolutely first-rate, begging
for repeated listens – and
listen to Ries' Stan Getz-esque sax solo
on the closer in front of the band's
cool simmer. Marvelous!" |
In Concert…

The month of November features Akira
Tana at the San
Francisco Jazz Festival.
His many Bay Area appearances include
a feature with Ann Hampton Calloway,
and The SF JAZZ Beacon Award Concert.
Look for him Downtown, in Stanford, and
in Berkeley.
This month also has Mike Holober supporting Canyon in
Peekskill, NY… Gene Bertoncini supporting Acoustic
Romance in New York City, SUNY Oswego,
Wesport Arts, and Edmonton, Alberta… Jay
Leonhart starting the month in
Palm Beach, then heading for Turkey and
the Ankara Jazz Festival, finally returning
stateside for appearances in Denver, Oregon,
and New York City… and guitarist Bob
Sneider in Rochester and Syracuse,
NY.
Please remember that our artist performance calendar is
online! Check here often
for the latest gig information. |
In
The Studio…
Jay
Leonhart plays it Cool with
his trio, featuring Ted Rosenthal on
piano and Joe Cohn on guitar.
On Halloween, the three completed tracking
for their next release on Sons of Sound,
with Grammy Award-winning engineer Katherine
Miller at the board. Look for the disc
in 2004. The trio can be seen on tour now
at the top of their game. |
Music
Education…
Mueller & Martin
Productions present Bill Bruford and
his jazz quartet, EARTHWORKS, Tuesday,
November 4, 7:00 PM and 9:30 PM, Max of
Eastman Place Atrium, Gibbs Street, Rochester.
For tickets and other information, please
contact Mueller & Martin Productions
(585) 414-8206 [www.prog90.com]
The
Commission Project (TCP)
will underwrite tickets for ten students
to attend a performance and the EARTHWORKS
sound check, to meet Bill and his bandmates.
The Commission Project plans to be
similarly involved with other Mueller & Martin
productions, a special opportunity
for a nonprofit educational organization
to work with a for-profit cultural
venture to do good deeds for kids.
Sons of Sound and its artists support
music education. We think The Commission
Project is particularly hip. Please
support them if you agree. |
