In Stores
 In
a 2002 concert review, Daniel Gewertz
of The Boston Herald declared
that Gene Bertoncini "raised
the all of soft, seductive jazz to new
levels of grace and adventure…."
Never before released in the US, Sons
of Sound is proud to introduce one of
the best-loved documents of Mr. Bertoncini's
repertoire: Acoustic
Romance. Along with the respected
rhythm section of Akira Tana and Rufus
Reid, Bertoncini celebrates 11 classic
love themes with thoughtful arrangements
and sensitive improvisation.
Acoustic Romance reaches stores
and radio stations around the country
on September 2nd.

 David
Zych of JazzTimes proclaims: "The
skillful writing and arranging of Mike
Holober deserves a medal."
We can't give him a medal, but we are
proud to honor Mike with his first solo
CD, Canyon.
This work offers the strength and open
space of its inspiration and features
a formidable line up of musicians: drummer
Brian Blade (Wayne Shorter, Nora Jones)
and bassist Scott Colley (Herbie Hancock),
both winners of their respective categories
in the DownBeat Critics Polls;
internationally respected guitarist Wolfgang
Muthspiel, and reedman Tim Ries, seen
on tour with the Rolling Stones.
Canyon hits stores around the
US on September 2nd, and radio on October
2nd.

Mike
Holober's Canyon is featured
in the September 2003 DownBeat "Indie
Spotlight," in print and on the
web at DownBeat.com.
Akira
Tana's Secret
Agent Men attracts the attention
of Cadence this month, as writer
Larry Hollis bets that "B-3 buffs
and video-types will definitely go for
this one. …this disc under his
leadership was a pleasant surprise to
me. As an extra added bonus, his coleader
(Rufus Reid) of the rotating combo TanaReid
is on board. …Utilizing the Hammond
organ of Dr. Lonnie Smith is a neat twist…"

Concert
For
nine years, J&R Music & Computer
World has brought out the stars of the
jazz galaxy for free concerts in historic
City Hall Park in downtown Manhattan.
This year's festival, held August 19-24,
featured Sons of Sound recording artist
Andy Parsons and his quartet, with Gene
Lewin on drums, Ben Monder on guitar,
and Adam Armstrong on bass in support
of Flip!.
Parsons was the penultimate act for the
festival, appearing just prior to headliner
Tom Scott.
Andy has been honored with a grant from Meet
The Composer for an elaboration
on the song "Miss Conception" from Flip! that
will accompany a 10-minute dance performance
by Spela Sterle & Dancers at the
Joyce Soho Dance Theater (NYC) in October.

In Schools
In
other dance-related news, The
Commission Project (TCP)
has joined forces with Garth Fagan Dance in
Rochester, NY, to coordinate educational
activities for music students.
On Saturday, September 6th, at 7:30PM,
thirty musicians will participate in
a master class with Wynton Marsalis and
attend the GRIOT NEW YORK 10th
anniversary celebration and performance
by Garth Fagan Dance and Wynton Marsalis
Septet at Eastman Theatre.
The opportunity for Rochester students
to learn from Wynton Marsalis and hear
and see GRIOT NEW YORK is exceptional
and follows TCP's mission to foster creativity
by bringing students together with professional
composers and performers. School of the
Arts, Eastman School of Music, and Hochstein
Memorial Music School students and TCP
are grateful to Garth Fagan Dance and
Wynton Marsalis and their respective
organizations for enriching lives.
Sons of Sound and its artists support
music education. We think TCP is particularly
hip. Please support them if you agree.
