 An
imaginative pianist and unique composer, Mike
Holober is emerging as one
of the freshest voices in jazz. His
international credits include a recent
tour as guest composer, conductor and
soloist with the Stockholm Jazz Orchestra.
The R.I.A.S. Big Band in Berlin regularly
programs his compositions, and he has
recently been invited to Helsinki as
a guest composer and pianist with UMO,
the National Jazz Radio Orchestra of
Finland.
On September 2nd, Sons of Sound will
proudly release Mike's first solo effort, Canyon,
featuring Brian Blade, Scott Colley,
Wolfgang Muthspiel, and Tim Ries. [read

 Gene
Bertoncini is one of the
most eloquent and versatile masters
of the guitar. With elegance and
ease, he bridges the jazz, classical,
pop, and bossa nova styles, integrating
his own spontaneous and tasteful
improvisations along the way. He
has earned highest critical acclaim
for his artistry on both the classical
and electric guitar.
Sons of Sound is proud to represent
Mr. Bertoncini on Acoustic
Romance, with Akira Tana and
Rufus Reid. Look for Acoustic Romance in
stores on September 2nd or from our
web site today. [read

In Print
 That's Carolyn
Leonhart on the cover of
the July issue of JAZZIZ magazine,
a well-deserved spotlight on an important
rising star in jazz, currently on
tour with Steely Dan.
We are proud to feature Ms. Leonhart
in our own way, as guest vocalist on Rodgers & Leonhart,
father Jay Leonhart's
latest CD, on which she contributes
a beautiful arrangement of "This
Nearly Was Mine" from the Rodgers & Hammerstein
musical South Pacific.

Artist
Spotlight
Drummer
and Sons of Sound recording artist Gene
Lewin is pictured (far right)
in a national ad campaign along with
his band mates from the pop group GrooveLily,
Gene's "other" gig. The subject
of the US Army ad is violinist Valerie
Vigoda, a former officer now working
as a musician (Joe Jackson, Cyndi Lauper).
If you'd rather hear
Gene's playing, go for Flip! by
Parsons, Lewin, Patitucci, and Monder
or A
Whole Nother Story by
the Andy Parsons/Gene Lewin Quintet.
Regarding Gene's work on Flip!,
Mark Corroto writes in All About
Jazz that "…[Lewin's]
gift lies in his frenzied dynamo attack
of cymbals and skins. Think Tony Williams
sits in with Weather Report… A
spin of this disc is quite a delight...." Check
Gene out before we lose him to the
Army band.

Music Education
 Ned
Corman, founder of The
Commission Project (TCP),
is receiving the Special Citation
Award, Oct. 2, from the Arts and
Cultural Council of Greater Rochester
(NY) for his championing of the Rochester
International Jazz Festival. Corman
is also being recognized for TCP's
ongoing music education efforts in
the greater Rochester area.
Furthermore, TCP is receiving an
$18,000 grant from the National
Endowment for the Arts to
support five composer residencies in
Rochester-area schools. More
than 450 students in grades four through
12 are benefiting from music specifically
composed for them during the 2003-04
school year. The program culminates
in a "Totally TCP" concert
in the spring, involving all students
and composers.
